Our Breast Cancer Unit Appeal

The Breast Cancer Unit Appeal raised almost £2.9 million for a dedicated Breast Care Unit at Yeovil Hospital.

The Unit opened in October 2024 thanks to the incredible support we received from our community. Breast care services were previously spread around the hospital, which meant that patients had to move around the hospital and undress in multiple locations. Our appeal changed this. The new unit will allow patients to have a biopsy, a mammogram, an ultrasound and a consultation all in one place. There is also space for difficult conversations, a dedicated waiting area away from the rest of the hospital and a meeting room for support groups and wellbeing activities.

Miss Caroline Osborne, one our consultant breast surgeons at Yeovil Hospital, says she’s thrilled that the Maple Unit is finally open following a long fundraising campaign.

“This is absolutely amazing news and I’m over the moon that it’s finally open” she says. “It has been such a long time in the making, from when we first came up with the idea 10 years ago, and the incredible fundraising campaign that followed, to seeing the unit getting built before our very eyes.

“I know that this is going to be fantastic for our excellent breast care team, we can already see the benefits it’ll have for our patients, and it’s something that will last for generations to come too.

Although the breast unit is now open, you can still support the team. Additional furniture and equipment will be needed on an ongoing basis. Any funds raised for the breast cancer unit will be made available to the breast care team and used to make a difference for breast care patients.
